6 Ways to Include You on Your To-Do List

You’ve got your priorities straight. You’ve put God and your faith at the top of your list. Your family, your responsibilities, and all those other bits and pieces of your life fall into place right about where they should. There’s one thing you may be leaving off your list: You.

We set our focus outside ourselves because we think that sort of selflessness is what God wants from us. Certainly service to others is something we’re called to; however, God is not asking us to do so at our own detriment. Think of your life as a ride on an airplane. The instructions are clear: if the oxygen masks drop down, put your own on first before you help anyone else. That’s not being selfish. It’s being realistic. You are no good to anyone if you’ve passed out from lack of oxygen, and likewise, if you’re burnt out and – dare we say – maybe even a little resentful, you’re not doing anyone any favors.

Me-time can span the gamut of full days of pampering to simple little moments captured through the day. Here are some ideas for the latter:

  • Rise and Shine: Set your alarm for a ½ hour (or more) before the rest of the household starts buzzing. Brew your favorite coffee or hot tea and do something that does not involve your to-do list.
  • Embrace your Inner Night Owl: Are you more of a night-owl than a morning person? After everyone else has turned in for the night, fire up the Netflix and watch that film no one else in the family was interested in seeing.
  • Learn something new: Web sites like the Khan Academy offer free online courses. Why not take a course in prehistoric art or teach yourself to code? There’s a broad list of topics you can learn this way.
  • Dial a friend: In this age of email and text messaging, handwritten notes are not the only causality. Stop typing and start talking. Call a good friend or relative and just talk.
  • Get moving: Lace up your running shoes and grab a little exercise. Go for a walk, a jog, or a bike ride. Outdoor adventure not in the cards? Turn up the music in your house then, and dance a little.
  • Prayer and Devotional: Perhaps the most important on the list, make sure you take some time to re-charge with God. Use you commute, your morning shower, or just before you fall asleep at night to pray. Read scripture. Consider using a devotional. You won’t regret it.
